How to reach us
Most of our guests arrive by private air charter, flying low over Malawi’s richly diverse landscapes. The final leg of their journey is completed by private vehicle or, weather permitting, you have the option of a luxury speedboat transfer. It is also possible to drive to Pumulani from Lilongwe in about three hours.
International flights to Malawi
International flights arrive at Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi. Several airlines fly into Lilongwe including Air Malawi, which operates a direct weekly service from London Gatwick. Other airlines include KLM/Kenya Airways via Nairobi and South African Airways via Johannesburg. British Airways flies to Johannesburg and Lusaka in Zambia, both of which offer onward connections to Lilongwe.
We also fly small aircraft from Mfuwe international airport, the gateway to South Luangwa, which is just 50 minutes from Lilongwe.
Flights to Lake Malawi
On arrival at Lilongwe’s Kamuzu Airport, Pumulani guests will be met by our staff, who will assist with immigration procedures and the payment of airport taxes. Most guests take a light aircraft to Monkey Bay, the closest airstrip to Pumulani.
Transfers to the lodge
When you disembark from your aircraft at Monkey Bay, our staff will be waiting to meet you. We offer a free transfer to the lodge, a 20-minute drive through African bush and local villages.
Beach and safari: Pumulani and Robin Pope Safaris
Many of our guests combine a relaxing stay on the beach with a wildlife safari in Majete Wildlife Reserve or in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park, staying at one of the luxury camps also run by Robin Pope Safaris.
From the camps in Zambia to Pumulani, the door-to-door journey takes only about four hours. Guests fly from Mfuwe in the South Luangwa to Lilongwe, then onto Monkey Bay.
Guests from the UK can fly with British Airways to Lusaka then onward to Mfuwe. From Pumulani they can then transfer back to Lilongwe and directly onto Nairobi, Lusaka or Johannesburg without returning to Mfuwe.
Passports and visas for Malawi
All visitors to Malawi need a full valid passport, although citizens of most EU countries, the United States and Australia do not require a visa. Visitors from other countries should
to check whether a visa is needed.
Departure taxes are currently US$7 for domestic departures and US$35 for international flights (does not apply for long haul flights as normally included).
We strongly recommend that you take out full trip cancellation insurance, as we do need to charge fees in the event of cancellation. All guests should have full travel, medical and luggage insurance. Pumulani bears no responsibility for any delays, cancellation of flights and change of itinerary, and retains the right to alter or cancel a booking with just reason.
As the transfers to the lodge are aboard light aircraft, please note that you must travel with soft-sided bags, and that there is a strict luggage limit of 15kg per person. Ensure you carry essential items, such as medication, spare glasses and a change of clothes, with you on international flights in the event that luggage is delayed.
Health in Malawi
We recommend that visitors to Malawi take malaria prophylactics. Bilharzia can be found in certain areas of Lake Malawi. Pumulani is regularly tested for bilharzia and all results have so far proved clear.
Tetanus, polio, typhoid and hepatitis vaccinations are recommended. Yellow fever immunisation is only required if you are entering Malawi from a yellow fever zone. Before travelling, please check with your doctor for up-to-date medical advice. It is advisable to know your blood type in case of emergency.
