Staying at Pumulani

Luxury accommodation, friendly personal service and stunning views over Lake Malawi combine to make Pumulani the perfect African beach lodge.

Individually designed by the Dutch architect, G. Hooft Graafland, the ten villas are modern and spacious, their clean lines blending harmoniously with the surrounding nature.

The name Pumulani means “rest well” in the local Chichewa language, and that’s exactly what we offer – the chance to unwind in a beautiful and tranquil setting.

Your accommodation

Nestled in lush hills above the still waters of Lake Malawi, our villas provide the ultimate in design and comfort. Their distinctive grass roofs reflect the heat of the African sun while the simple and elegant interiors ensure comfort and privacy.

Each of the villas is different, varying in size from a generous 125 square metres up to 175 square metres. Each has a large bedroom, a comfortable sitting area and a well equipped bathroom with bathtub, double shower and twin sinks.

The gently curving lines of the villas reflect the patterns of the lake, while interior design details are inspired by the surrounding nature – the beach, the flora and the marine life. The bedrooms open out onto private decking where guests can enjoy the morning sun, while the lounge areas have sliding doors that give access to a private deck with stunning lake views.

The accommodation comprises:

  • 4 villas with twin beds
  • 4 villas with a king size bed
  • 1 honeymoon chalet
  • 1 family room that sleeps 4 (or 5 with smaller children)

Personal service

At Pumulani, we pride ourselves on providing the very highest possible levels of service. Friendly, well-trained staff will attend to your every need.

Experienced travellers to Africa may be familiar with the luxury bush lodges run by Robin Pope Safaris in Zambia’s South Luangwa Valley. As a part of the Robin Pope Safaris group, Pumulani will offer service to the same extremely high level.

Dining at Pumulani

It is only fitting that our superb location and luxurious accommodation should be matched by outstanding dining. Our restaurant serves the finest international cuisine taking advantage of fresh local ingredients. All meals and drinks are included in our rates and guests can choose to eat either inside, or outside on our deck overlooking the lake.

We offer an extensive breakfast with an à la carte menu, while lunch is made up of light, tasty dishes including a variety of salads, meat and fresh fish. At sunset we offer snacks and drinks followed by a sumptuous three-course dinner. There is also a lakeside bar serving light snacks and drinks, all included in our rates.

Our chefs are happy to alter meal times to fit individual guest needs, so if you arrive late or depart early, or if you are enjoying one of our many activities, there is no need for you to miss a meal.

Relaxing at Pumulani

Our remote location makes Pumulani the perfect place to relax and recharge your batteries. Lie on the beach or recline on a sun bed beside our beautiful infinity pool.

Children at Pumulani

Children are welcome at Pumulani, but from 15 July - September we have an age limit of seven years.

Electricity and water

Pumulani is supplied by 220V mains electricity. Malawi uses UK-style three-pin plugs, so if you are visiting from mainland Europe or the US, you may wish to bring your own adapters.

In the event of a power cut we run our own generator. Please note that it takes a few minutes before the generator kicks in after a power cut. Our water is purified but we advise you to drink the bottled water, which is supplied free of charge.
